SCUSD celebrates Walk to School Day on October 8
International event promotes wellness, pedestrian safety
October 6, 2014 (Sacramento): Sacramento City Unified School District schools will observe International Walk to School Day on Wednesday, October 8, with a celebration at Hubert H. Bancroft Elementary School.
The event is aimed at raising awareness of healthy lifestyle choices and pedestrian safety on busy city streets. Staff from SCUSD’s Safe Schools Office will be on hand to discuss safe routes to school and other tips. Superintendent José L. Banda will be among those greeting parents and students at Bancroft.
International Walk to School Day is a global event that involves communities from more than 40 countries walking and biking to school on the same day. Organized by the Partnership for a Walkable America, Walk to School Day began in 1997 as a one-day event aimed at building awareness for the need for walkable communities. It has, over time, become a staple event for schools. Thousands of schools across America – from all 50 states, the District of Columbia, and Puerto Rico – participate every October.
