Independent Study

Independent Study Option

Overview

Per state law, districts offering independent study are required to comply with Ed Code and Assembly Bill (AB) AB 181 requirements.  In-person instruction is encouraged and beginning in the 2024-2025 school year students will be on campus for a minimum of 1 day a week.  For students and families interested in an independent study option, Sacramento City Unified will offer a long-term independent study program.  For students unable to attend for a limited period, such as COVID quarantine, the district will offer intermittent independent study for short-term.

As part of the independent study program, students will receive access to standards-aligned content and courses required for graduation and meeting the University of California (UC) and California State University (CSU) A-G course requirements. This may include independent assignments, reading, computer-based activities via Schools PLP, Google Drive, Google Classroom and interactions with their teacher.

While most work will be completed independently, academic support consistent with AB 181 will be available for students. Live instruction, also called synchronous instruction, will vary by student segment, and will be consistent with AB 181:

  • For TK – Grade 3: Students will receive an opportunity for daily synchronous instruction with a credentialed teacher.
  • For Grades 4-8: Students will interact daily with with school staff, and will receive synchronous instruction from a credentialed teacher at least once per week
  • For Grades 9-12: Students will receive synchronous instruction from a credentialed teacher at least weekly
