Sacramento, CA –  Sacramento City Unified School District will hold a Key Passing Ceremony to celebrate the opening of Floyd Farms at Leataata Elementary School. Floyd Farms, a state of the art green facility, includes space and programming support for students and community members.

On December 6, 2018, the City of Sacramento and Sacramento City Unified School District entered into the Leataata Floyd Elementary School Farm and Community Garden Project Agreement which allowed for the City to use excess land at the school site to establish an urban farm and a community garden to benefit the residents within the Northwest Land Park development and the surrounding community, including the students who attend the school and their parents.

Floyd Farm is developed to be an urban farm for the purpose of educating students about agriculture, environmental protection, health and nutrition. In January 2016, the Sacramento City Unified School District approved the Food Literacy Center, a non-profit corporation, as operator of the Floyd Farm. Food Literacy Center intends to also use the Farm to educate school parents and the larger community about how sustainable gardening provides health and nutrition benefits.

I believe this collaboration will be a model for the state and for the nation” said Lisa Murawski, 1st Vice President, Sacramento City Unified School District Board of Education. ”This state-of-the-art facility is absolutely beautiful, and I am giddy with excitement for the experiential learning that will happen here for our kids. Every child deserves to fully enjoy the bounty of our farm to fork capital, and to learn to prepare fresh and nutritious food. I am so proud of our district today, and so grateful to our community for investing in our children.” 

Floyd Farm will serve approximately 330 elementary school students that are enrolled at Leataata Floyd Elementary and their families, as well as students throughout the District and community. 

The new state-of-the-art, green facility will include and support: 

• Cooking School – Students at multiple SCUSD schools will receive instruction on food literacy and how to cook healthy meals.  
• Prep Kitchen – A place for Food Literacy Center staff and volunteers to prep for after school programs across the school district, focused on Title 1 schools.  
• Training Space – Food Literacy Center staff will train future instructors of the curriculum and manage the day-to-day operations of the 2.5-acre project that will reach students daily.  
• Community Programs – Including family cooking classes, school field trips, and more.
