Become A Substitute Teacher and Serve Your Community by Helping to Keep Kids in Classrooms
Sac City Unified is Acting on Governor’s Executive Order to Streamline Substitute Teacher Emergency Credentials

Press release

Sacramento City Unified School District (SCUSD) is actively recruiting newly eligible substitute teachers thanks to a new state Executive Order to streamline the process for substitute teacher emergency credentials. This Executive Order will increase opportunities for more members of the public to serve in our classrooms. SCUSD schools have 39,759 children spanning grades kindergarten to 12th grade across 70 campuses citywide.

“This Executive Order will create an accessible opportunity for many to experience teaching students, while also serving their community and improving outcomes for children at a critical time. Despite the challenges we are currently facing, we support Governor Newsom’s commitment and problem solving approach to remain open for safe, in-person learning at all school sites. This order will also help our District address staffing shortages and inequities in our system that impact some of our schools more than others“ said Jorge A. Aguilar, Superintendent, Sacramento City Unified School District. We urgently need support from our community to keep students in school and we hope to see our Sacramento community step in at this critical time of an unprecedented pandemic.”

“Keeping our schools open for in-person learning not only prevents learning loss and keeps education equitable, it makes our community safer,” said Christina Pritchett, Board of Education President, Sacramento City Unified School District. “Thanks to our testing program, vaccine clinics, and mitigation efforts our schools have case rates far below the community spread in the neighborhoods that surround them. We strongly encourage you to help us by joining us at Sac City Unified. Sub-in and be a hero.”

The State of California has removed the application requirement with the Commission on Teaching Credentials (CTC) while still requiring the Basic Skills Requirement. In addition, assignments may be extended from 60 days to 120 days. Retired teachers may return to work with additional pay barriers removed. Interested candidates will need to have a BA or BS degree from an accredited university, and be able to complete a background check.
