What: Suy:u Elementary Welcome Event and Renaming Ceremony

Sacramento, CA - The newly renamed Suy:u Elementary will hold a school renaming dedication ceremony at their annual welcome event on Tuesday, August 29 from 4:00pm to 6:00pm. The campus walk-thru event is where students will meet their teacher and receive their class schedule for the upcoming school year that begins on Thursday, August 31.

In the Fall of 2020, SCUSD identified schools in the district that were originally named for individuals who history has confirmed engaged in, perpetuated, and/or condoned racism, oppression, colonization and exclusion of others, even genocide. As part of Sac City Unified’s commitment to confront and interrupt racism and create safe learning environments that are welcoming, inclusive, and inspiring places for all students and staff, the SCUSD Board of Education voted at the June 22, 2023 meeting to rename three schools, which included Suy:u Elementary School (formerly Peter Burnett Elementary School). Suy:u (pronounced “suu you”) is the Miwok name for hawk.

“We are always excited to welcome back our students to school each year, but this year is so very different,” said Jennifer Santos, Principal, Suy:u Elementary. “We’re thrilled to host this dedication ceremony that we planned with members of the Wilton Rancheria so that we can teach our students about these restorative efforts that will begin right here at our school this year.”

Other Sacramento City Unified schools beginning the 2023-24 school year with new names include Miwok Middle School (formerly Sutter Middle School), and Umoja International Academy (formerly named Kit Carson International Academy).
