Sacramento, CA – Sac City Unified staff partnered with LGBTQ+ advocates to create a Board Resolution and organize a flag raising event to better support our transgender staff, students and community members and formally recognize the week leading up to March 31, 2023 as Trans Week of Visibility. The draft Board Resolution, which was approved with minor amendments at the Board of Education meeting on Thursday, March 16 may be read in its entirety here (see pages 9-13). This resolution is significant because it affirms the District’s support of our transgender staff and students with clear and urgent action items, and encourages classroom discussion on the importance of trans visibility. The historic flag raising ceremony also sends a strong message to our trans community that they are welcomed and supported in Sacramento City Unified School District.
“Every student deserves to be seen, supported and loved. This is especially important for students who are historically most vulnerable, including trans youth. Our District’s Trans Day of Visibility is a signal of our commitment to equity and support for all students, as well as staff and members of our community who are trans,” said SCUSD Board of Education President, Chinua Rhodes.
The flag raising event and press conference will take place at 11am, and after speakers say a few words to commemorate the event, the flag will be raised through the end of March, culminating in Trans Day of Visibility.
