SCUSD to Host “Know Your Rights” Presentations
Information from attorneys for immigrant families regarding interactions with ICE

Press release

Sacramento, CA - Sacramento City Unified will host the first in a series of presentations to inform immigrant families of their rights regarding immigration enforcement, and share more information about SCUSD’s Safe Haven District policies.

“There is a great deal of misinformation and anxiety in our community when it comes to immigration enforcement and what protections people have,” said Jasjit Singh, SCUSD Board of Education President. “SCUSD will host a series of these “Know Your Rights’ events in all of our trustee areas so we can help our immigrant community carry on with their daily lives, such as seeking an education for their children without fear of separation. The events are open to all Sacramentans, so any community member can come learn about their legal rights. The first event will take place tomorrow evening at Miwok Middle School at 5:30 PM. Subsequent event information will be provided as it becomes available.”

On Tuesday, February 25, SCUSD Board of Education President Jasjit Singh will welcome all members of the community to Miwok Middle School’s cafeteria for a 90-minute presentation on SCUSD’s policies related to migrant students rights and ICE response protocol. Afterward, Immigration Attorney Kishwer Vikaas, and the Asian/Pacific Bar Association of Sacramento (ABAS) will make sure that attendees know their rights according to state and federal laws, learn the dos and dont’s during ICE encounters to improve safety, and provide attendees with an opportunity to ask attorneys any clarifying questions they may have.

This event is Tuesday, February 25, from 5:30 to 7:00 P.M. in the Miwok Middle School cafeteria at 3150 I Street, Sacramento. Translation services will be available for Spanish and Chinese speaking community members.
