Sacramento, CA – Sacramento City Unified School District announced today that a ribbon cutting ceremony for the new Hiram Johnson High School Football Stadium will be held on Friday, March 17, 2023 at 12:00 p.m. The new stadium will be home for Hiram Johnson’s football, soccer, track and field athletic teams and also host events for band and other school activities.
“SCUSD uses an equity focus to allocate school facility resources in ways that benefit students and prioritize communities in our city that have been historically underserved,” said SCUSD Board President Chinua Rhodes. “It is exciting to see this commitment come to fruition with the grand opening of the beautiful new sports stadium at Hiram Johnson High School.”
“Hiram Johnson’s new sports stadium is an ode to our students, athletes, and staff- that we are committed to them and their success,” said Sacramento City Unified School Board Member Jasjit Singh. “Investments such as this are long overdue for neighborhoods like Tahoe Park, and for our diverse Hiram Johnson student population. This beautiful new amenity is a welcome addition to the campus and I look forward to watching our Warriors prevail both on the field and in the classroom.”
Media are invited to cover this special event where they will be welcomed by performances from Hiram Johnson cheer, band, and drumline. SCUSD has invited Hiram Johnson’s athletic alumni to be in attendance. The brand new press box where media will cover future Hiram Johnson events will also be available to tour.
“The students of Hiram Johnson High School are ecstatic that our campus is now prepared to host events for football, soccer and track,” said Garrett Kirkland, Principal, Hiram Johnson High School. “The new stadium on campus is a welcomed upgrade and will allow our students to prepare for and compete in events like other high schools. We’d like to thank Superintendent Jorge Aguilar, Chief Business Officer Rose Ramos, and district operations and facility teams for all of their work. Former Board Member Leticia Garcia also played a large part in this stadium being here today. We look forward to our Johnson students having the opportunity to dedicate themselves to working hard and improving themselves and our teams at this amazing facility.”
This multi-phase project started in 2017 using funds from the voter approved Measure Q bond. Phase one was completed in the fall of 2018 and included the installation of a synthetic turf football field and all-weather track. In 2021, the project moved into its main phase which included new home (1,054 seats) and visitor (642 seats) bleachers, sport field lighting, an overhead entrance sign and home and visitor concession and restroom buildings.
Over the last year, Sac City Unified shared updates on the construction progress with the community as the stadium began to rise from the ground.
