At the February 15 meeting of the Sacramento City Unified School District Board, the Board recognized Sam Brannan Middle School students Sabrina Mallette and Bella Pedroza as Stellar Students. Sabrina is recognized by school staff for being kind, hardworking, creative, and caring for her school community. Bella is a straight A student with a passion for learning, excellent citizenship, and classwork that consistently exceeds expectations.

Two additional Sam Brannan students, Isabella Marshall and Victoriana Martinez, were also identified as Stellar Students, but were unable to attend this Board meeting.

Isabella is kind, self-motivated, and a leader on campus. She is recognized for being helpful to her teachers and fellow students. Victoriana is one of Sam Brannan’s inaugural Junior Campus Monitors, and is a  kind and hardworking student who ares for her peers, her school community, and her classmates.

The Board took action to approve a resolution to recognize the week of February 26-March 3 as Eating Disorders Awareness Week to help to educate the public about eating disorders and to engage in efforts to provide hope and to engage support for individuals and families affected by eating disorders.

The Board approved the addition of “Early College” to the official name of Sacramento New Technology High School, making the school’s name “Sacramento New Technology Early College High School” effective for the 2024-25 school year.

The Board held a public hearing and subsequently approved a resolution to convey easement entitlements to Sacramento Municipal Utilities District (SMUD) for a utilities easement at Nicholas Elementary as part of the new construction at that site. SMUD requires a utility easement to move and provide electrical services to the site.

The Board approved a resolution to eliminate vacant certificated positions due to a reduction of particular kinds of service due to declining enrollment, ensuring the District’s long-term fiscal health, and/or District program needs. With the reduction of these positions, no certificated employees will receive a layoff notice based on known attrition, current vacancies, and the use of one-time funds.

The Board also approved a resolution to provide notice of layoff to come classified employees for the 2024-2025 school year as part of a potential reduction in force based on a lack of work and/or lack of funds, and to ensure the District’s long-term fiscal health.

The Board received informational updates on the following topics:

• The SCUSD Homeless Educational Services program which supports the enrollment, attendance, and achievement of students who are experiencing homelessness to ensure they receive equal access to educational opportunities. Donations are welcomed to support students and families experiencing homelessness, including new clothing, socks, shoes and underwear, and hygiene items such as laundry soap, toothpaste and toothbrushes, diapers, shampoo and deodorant. • Special education services to meet the academic, behavioral, and social emotional needs of SCUSD students with disabilities and address disproportionality.
   
• A mid-year review and update on the District and the District’s dependent charter schools Local Control and Accountability Plan (LCAP) implementation and related outcomes.
