Congratulations to our Stellar Students from Bret Harte Elementary!Sada Ahmed and Omar Altamimi from CAIR California with the SCUSD Board of Education to recognize the month of April as National Arab American Heritage Month

At the April 10 meeting of the Sacramento City Unified School District Board of Education, the Board recognized Robert Casillas, Eshal Sajid, Rose Casillas, Maxwell Sin, Dhruv Gupta, and May Akiyama from Bret Harte Elementary as our Stellar Students. These six students were celebrated by their teachers for completing school work on time, supporting classmates, being self motivated, positive attitudes, being engaged and asking questions, and for being good role models. Congratulations to our Stellar Students!

During the Open Session, informational reports were received by the Board, including:

  • Recognition of April as National Arab American Heritage Month, which is a time to celebrate the diverse culture and historical contributions of Arab Americans. April was chosen as National Arab American Heritage Month for symbolic reasons, as it marks the beginning of spring, symbolizing hope, growth, color, and new beginnings.
     
  • An update In honor of Earth Day, on how Sacramento City Unified School District (SCUSD) is mitigating and adapting to climate change through projects and programming focused on buildings and energy, restorative schoolyards, waste reduction, and transportation.
     
  • A presentation from Adult Education Director, Marla Clayton Johnson, about SCUSD Adult Education in recognition of Adult Education Week.
     
  • A comprehensive overview of the Special Education Department’s budget, programs, and services. The presentation showcased the range of programs and services available to support students with disabilities, including specialized instructional programs, related services, and initiatives aimed at improving student outcomes. Additionally, it addressed current challenges, staffing needs, and future priorities to enhance the effectiveness and accessibility of special education services within the district.

Determination Hearings for Charter Renewals were held for both The MET, and George Washington Carver School of Arts and Science. Afterward, the Board approved both schools for five-year renewals of their charters beginning on July 1, 2025.

The Board held a Hearing and Adoption of the District’s Initial Proposals Regarding Collective Bargaining Agreement Negotiations for 2025-2026 Re-Opener for both the Teamsters Classified Supervisors (TCS) and also the Teamsters Union, Local 150. After the hearing and adoption, the Board Received Initial Proposals Regarding Collective Bargaining Agreements for Teamsters Classified Supervisors (TCS) and Teamsters Union, Local 150.
