Sacramento City Unified is in the process of adopting instructional materials for use in AP (Advanced Placement) African American Studies* starting in the 2025-26 academic year. Teachers, students, parents/guardians and community members have the opportunity to review and provide input about the instructional materials being considered for adoption, and we want your feedback.

Instructional materials are selected and evaluated with great care so that they will effectively support the courses of study as outlined by The College Board and meet current curricular goals. The process for community review and feedback is open throughout the month of March 2025. The recommended materials and evidence from evaluation will be presented to the Board of Education for a public hearing and final approval.

Digital Materials are available for you to review at the links below, or you can visit the Serna Center to review printed copies (5735 47th Avenue, Sacramento, CA 95824 – Second Floor Lobby). The Serna Center is open from 8:00am to 5:00pm, Monday through Friday.

The instructional materials under consideration are as follows:

AP African American Studies Course & Exam Description

  • The African-American Odyssey: High School Edition; 7th ed; 2020; Pearson
  • From Slavery to Freedom: A History of African Americans; 10th ed; 2022; McGraw Hill
  • Freedom on my Mind: A History of African Americans; 3rd ed; 2025

* The course description for AP African American Studies has been previously developed and field tested for use in CA High Schools, allowing it to be ready for use in SCUSD in 25-26. Concurrently, the SCUSD History/Social Science department is developing a general education African American Studies course that will be ready for implementation in 26-27. All AP courses are open access for any interested student and no SCUSD student is charged for AP Exam Participation.
