April K. Ybarra
Board of Education Member, Area 4

Board Member 12/24 - 12/28

Hello! My name is April Ybarra. I was born in Sacramento and attended five schools within the Sacramento City Unified School District during my upbringing. My high school education was in El Paso, TX. As a mom of two daughters—one currently a student and the other a former student in Sac City—I bring a unique perspective on the challenges that families encounter. This personal experience drives my advocacy for policies that prioritize student success and promote family engagement.

Throughout my daughters’ education, I have actively participated in the school site council at each of their schools. I was an original member of the SCUSD Local Control Accountability Plan Committee (LCAP) and an original member of the SCUSD Community Schools Advisory Committee. Additionally, I served on both the District English Learner Advisory Committee (DELAC) and the English Language Advisory Committee at each of my daughters’ schools. In the 2018-19 academic year, I participated in a California Department of Education’s Ad Hoc Committee, which focused on developing a metric for Family Engagement.

I am also a nationally certified trainer for the nonprofit Parent Teacher Home Visits, a national movement that was established in Sacramento. In this role, I prepare educators to engage effectively with parents, fostering deeper understanding and collaboration that significantly benefits students.

I am dedicated to overcoming differences and fostering collaboration among all stakeholders. By leveraging my experience, I aim to help ensure that every student, parent, teacher, and support staff member have the opportunity to succeed.
