SUBJECT: WeTiP
HOTLINE
In an effort to reduce
school related crime, the Schools Insurance Authority has adopted the
“WeTiP” program, an anonymous hotline that receives crime tips from
students, school staff and community members who have information about
crimes and potentially dangerous activity on school campuses.
“WETIP” is both a prevention
tool and a crime reporting instrument for member schools affected by
problems such as arson, illegal drug use, graffiti, vandalism, weapons and
bullying. By promoting the “WETIP” program among students, staff, and
neighbors, schools affirm that they will not tolerate crimes on their
campuses and reveal that their sites are being watched.
Established in 1972, the
hotline is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year.
Callers to “WETIP” are totally anonymous not just confidential. There is no
tracing of calls or any way to identify callers. This may be an incentive
to anyone who has hesitation about sharing information for fear of being
identified. A reward of up to $1,000.00 per crime is offered, and a system
is in place to pay any rewards anonymously.
For the program to be a
success, it must be promoted regularly, and “WETIP” posters are available
for mounting around school campuses for all to see. It’s also especially
important to post the “WETIP” phone number following incidents of campus
arson or vandalism. The “WETIP” hotline is (800)78-CRIME and the website is
www.wetip.com.
Sergeant Vince Matranga will
be the liaison for the “WETIP” program. “WETIP” posters and informational
brochures will be mailed to your school as soon as they arrive. Should you
have any questions, please contact Sergeant Vince Matranga at 643-7444 or
752-3620.
