Superintendent's Message:

Fall, 2010

Dear Families and Friends:

The start of school is just around the corner, and with it comes the anticipation of an academic year filled with vibrant learning opportunities for all the children and families we serve. All principals, teachers and staff at Sacramento City Unified School District are working hard to ensure our schools are welcoming, friendly, engaging learning environments – from the curb to the classroom –on your child’s first day and every day. If you are not already a Sac City family, we hope you will visit one of our campuses in the coming months and experience for yourself our commitment to excellence in all we do.

We have much to be proud of in our district, and this year we will be adding to our diverse line up of educational opportunities.  At Alice Birney, Theodore Judah and Bancroft/Thomas Jefferson schools, we will be opening new Early Kinder programs aimed at easing that critical transition from home and play to the rigors of school. At the Elder Creek Elementary School campus, we are opening a Chinese language immersion program, where children will learn the world’s most spoken language. And at Hiram Johnson High School, we have a new School of the Arts, an exciting academy experience for teens passionate about visual and performing arts.

These programs, and all our offerings, are fulfilling our mission to provide every child with a challenging and inspiring educational experience that prepares them for college or a 21st century career.

Our roadmap for moving our district forward is Strategic Plan 2010-14: Putting Children First, which is built around three basic ideas:  Career and College Ready Students, Family and Community Engagement and Organizational Transformation.

The plan sets high expectations for teaching and learning. Our principals, teachers and staff are dedicated to this end, but we know these lofty goals cannot be achieved without the support of our community – especially parents, our most important partners. You can help us kick off a successful year of great learning by carefully preparing for the first day of school. But don’t stop there – consider the many other ways you can help throughout the year.

Together, we can make Sacramento City Unified School District a model of innovation, teamwork and excellence.

Sincerely,

Jonathan P. Raymond
