Strategic Plan
Strategic Plan 2010 - 2014

Sacramento City Unified School District is located in Sacramento, California.

Sacramento is the state capital of California. The state of California is larger than many countries.  Sacramento is in the heart of the historic gold country, with equal access to the mountains, ocean and the San Francisco bay area.

Our District is over 150 years old.  It began in 1854 on the corner of 5th and K Streets.  There were two teachers and about 50 boys and 40 girls aged seven through nine.  Sacramento High School, the second oldest high school west of the Mississippi opened in 1856.  The first kindergarten was opened in 1895.

The district grew steadily every decade and now is among the 10 largest school districts in California serving about 50,000 K-12 students and 20,000 adult education students.  We employ approximately 3,000 teachers and 3,000 classified non teaching employees (clerical/technical, maintenance, classroom support, nutrition, and transportation).

Sacramento City is “unified” because we have all grades from kindergarten through 12th.  Along with neighborhood schools, we offer specialized programs such as basic or fundamental, alternative schools, Waldorf methods, charter, JRROTC, international study, criminal justice, and independent study.

In addition, we believe that all children need a good start.
There are many Early Head Start, Head Start and state preschools, Children’s Centers and adult education parent participation preschools.  Our adult education program offers a wide range of academic and vocational subjects.
